Rising Stars Season Recap: Callum Williamson
Speedway Australia Rising Star Callum Williamson had a year full of learning experiences in the 410 Sprintcar division and will be looking to build on his skills in 2011/12.
The 2010/11 season was Callum’s first in the 410 Sprintcar division, having competed in 360 Sprintcars in 2009/10. Callum commented on the learning experiences the team endured this season.
“We struggled throughout our first season in the 410’s in qualifying, and unfortunately for us, qualifying is the key to a successful night.
“The highlight of our season would have to be qualifying second in the last meeting of the season; we went back to basics with the car setup and that really helped.”
After qualifying well, Callum experienced the car troubles that had plagued him all season when spark box malfunctions hampered his heats. The youngster would battle back in the feature race before blowing a tyre.
“I started (the A Main) out of 17th and managed to get in touch with 6th place before my front tyre blew, forcing me to retire from the race. Ryan Farrell even came up and congratulated me after the race.”
Callum learnt many lessons in his first 410 Sprintcar season, improving most in his lap-to-lap consistency and racing in traffic.
“I really feel that I now have the confidence to chase the track up to the wall and run high to make passes.”
In 2011/12, Callum plans to travel to more race meetings and will have a new engine tuner on board to help the team along. He’ll also be using his experience at the AIS to improve his diet and exercise program in order to compete at the peak of his ability.
“I’m really looking forward to the 2011/12 Season to build on our experiences from this season.
“A huge thank you goes out to Speedway Australia and my sponsors Precision Camps & Equipment, Patience Bulk Haulage, Oil Vac of Australia, Centrals Earthmoving, Williamson Motorsport and Team BCM.”
