Blake Skipper Selected As 2012 Speedway Australia Rising Star
Blake Skipper, of Kirrawee New South Wales, has been selected as a 2012 Speedway Australia Rising Star.
Blake has been associated with Speedway for his entire life, recalling early memories of watching his father in action.
"My first memories were working with Dad in the garage on his sprintcar from the age of 2 or 3, and weekly visits to Parramatta City Raceway every Saturday night," recalled Skipper.
Content for many years to work with his Dad as a crew member, Blake was given the opportunity to step into a Wingless Sprintcar in 2009, fuelling the youngster's passion for the sport.
"When [I was] given the opportunity to race a Wingless Sprint in 2009, it just gave me the taste, and from then on I could think of nothing but racing and couldn't focus on anything else."
Blake continued to pilot his Wingless Sprintcar until the end of the 2011 season, when he was offered the chance to fulfil a dream and move into the Sprintcar category for 2011/12.
"This is my first year in a Sprintcar, and is an opportunity I am very grateful for," said Blake. "My grandfather, who has also been involved in Speedway for most of his life, bought acar and offered me the drive."
"To me this was an opportunity to the next step of my dream."
Blake's ultimate goal in Speedway is to make a career out of his motor racing talent, and will use his time as a Speedway Australia Rising Star to set individual goals for himself and learn more about becoming a top level athlete.
"The opportunity to participate in the Rising Star Program and experience the AIS would be another step closer to help me achieve my goals."
Participants in the 2012 Rising Star Program will travel to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra during the first half of the year for an intensive 3 day camp with Australia's best sporting trainers and experts.
