Brendan Guerin Selected As 2012 Speedway Australia Rising Star
Brendan Guerin of Broken Hill in New South Wales has been selected as a 2012 Speedway Australia Rising Star.
At 22 years of age and a qualified Diesel Fitter working in the mines of Broken Hill, Brendan is no stranger to hard work, a trait that carries over into his Speedway racing career.
Together with his father, Guerin currently competes in the 360 Sprintcar category for the 7 Day Spares Racing Team.
Prior to competing in Speedway, Brendan had been a Speedway fan for most of his life.
"I have been going to speedway for as long as I can remember," told Brendan. "Firstly to support my Dad, then crew for him, and eventually starting my own career in the sport."
Guerin's debut came in the Junior Sedan category, where he would race for 3 seasons and achieve reasonable success, including feature wins at Mildura, Renmark and Broken Hill.
More accolades came when Brendan made the jump to compete in Wingless Sprintcars for 2 seasons, claiming numerous feature race wins and the Easter Trail Series in South Australia.
"The stand out moment for me was being voted the Driver's Driver in my final Wingless season, when I also claimed the Easter Trail in South Australia," the youngster recounted.
The biggest step in Brendan's career came last season, when he graduated to 360 Sprintcars.
"Last Season I took the big step into 360 Sprintcars, and while the results didn’t go all my way, I was learning at a rate of knots, which helped me earn fourth in the Speedway City Track Championship, and the Encouragement award from Wendy Turner."
2011/12 is shaping up to me Brendan's most successful campaign yet, currently placing third in the Speedway City Track Championship, including a round 4 feature race win on December 3 2011.
Brendan hopes the Speedway Australia Rising Star Program and time at the AIS will assist him in realising his Speedway goals of becoming a top-line 410 Sprintcar driver.
"My future goals are to win the Speedway City Track Championship this season, and also to have success at the Australian Title in March. My other short term goal is to drive my father’s 410 Sprintcar at the Murray Bridge 40 Lap Spectacular."
"Next season I plan on starting my 410 Sprintcar career full time, kicking off what I hope will be a long and successful time for me. I know it will be another difficult step and steep learning curve in my racing career to go against the sports elite drivers, but I'm ready for the challenge!"
Participants in the 2012 Rising Star Program will travel to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra during the first half of the year for an intensive 3 day camp with Australia's best sporting trainers and experts.
