Tatnell Retains Australia 1 At Speedway City
Brooke Tatnell turned away all challengers over the weekend to retain his Australian Sprintcar Championship for another year.
Shaun Dobson followed Tatnell home in the family-owned T77 car, while fellow World Series Sprintcars contracted driver David Murcott rounded out the podium in the Dowling Brothers car, his regular Adelaide drive.
Steven Lines in the Monster Energy Monte Motorsport W7 entered the A Main race as a hot favourite, but driver error led to a collision with the turn 4 exit wall, later forcing the SA native to retire from the lead. 18 year old Shaun Dobson assumed the lead, but couldn't hold off a determined Tatnell, who made the pass and used experience, track knowledge and precision driving through lapped traffic to pull away for the winning result.
The A Main race featured 8 of the 12 World Series Sprintcars contracted drivers, with a number of talented youngsters and accomplished stars rounding out the 20 strong starting lineup.
The youngsters of the group certainly made a strong case for the changing of the guard in the Sprintcar ranks.
Shaun Dobson placed second, Victorian Jamie Veal turned in a magnificent drive to narrowly miss the podium in 4th, Jamie Bricknell (Tasmania) finished 6th, South Australia fan favourite Matt Egel followed in 7th, and a host of others had strong showings on the big stage including Daniel Pestka and WSS frontrunner, James McFadden.
Upon exiting the KMS Toyota Genuine Parts machine, Tatnell couldn't hide his joy.
“It doesn’t matter who you’re driving for but when you’re driving for the best guys in the country, it’s a great feeling,” Tatnell said immediately after exiting the Toyota Genuine Parts machine. “I know what it feels like to finish second and finish third in the Australian Title, so I feel for these young blokes, but I drive for the best guys anywhere in the world and you couldn’t have scripted it any better – this one is going to be remembered for a long, long time in my book.”
Retirements from the main event were Garry Brazier, Steven Lines and Ryan Farrell.
