Rising Star Thomas Davies Set To Contest Australian Championship
2012 Speedway Australia Rising Star, Thomas Davies, is preparing to take on the country's best Formula 500 competitors over the Easter long weekend.
Situated 30 kilometres east of Warrnambool, Victoria, Laang Speedway will host the 49th running of the Formula 500 Australian Championship, where as many as 57 competitors have nominated.
Fresh from a 5th place finish in the Oval Express Formula 500 Series, 2012 Speedway Australia Rising Star Thomas Davies will be aiming to continue his run of form and showcase his skills against a talented field.
"I certainly have confidence going into the race meeting after the Oval Express Series," noted Davies. "I'm certainly more familiar with the competition's driving styles and knowing what I need to do to get a good result."
Thomas will be piloting the Terry Kowald-owned PMP WA 34, a machine that the youngster has some history in.
"I drove Terry's car about 18 months ago for 3 races and did really well, winning 2 races and finishing 2nd to Daniel Harding (Australian Champion at the time) in the other."
"I blew up the engine in our car, which hasn't been fixed yet, so I gave Terry a call and he agreed to give me the drive for the Title."
Another participant in the 2012 Speedway Australia Rising Stars Program, Josh Fort, will suit up for the weekend, facing off against Davies in 2 of the pair's 4 heats.
"I got to know Josh a lot better at the AIS Camp in Canberra," said Davies. "We're going to be working out of the same workshop in Warrnambool for the title weekend."
With the lessons learned at the Australian Institute of Sport, a competitive car and experience at the host venue, Thomas is looking forward to competing against the best.
"Laang is a short track at only 285 metres, which leads to much closer racing and more passing opportunities when track conditions are right."
"On the flip side, the closer racing means you can get yourself into trouble a little easier too."
"I think I have a great chance of doing well in Terry's car, it reacts really well to setup changes and I feel more competitive behind the wheel."
Thomas would like to thank the valuable support of Terry Kowald and his sponsors Bunbury Plumbing Supplies, Coal Cliff Plant Hire, Higgs Haulage, Ausmech Solutions, Causurina Marine & Harbour Services, Bunbury Roofing, PMP Chassis, CSI Shocks USA, Jettco and Fatheadz Eyewear. Thomas also thanked his supporters, RBH Mechanical Services, Boddington bWA, Nardini Bros. Makit Narrogin Hardware, Fuel Distributors of WA Pty Ltd, Kulker Cabinets and Statewide Oil.
