Brody Thomsen Wins 2012 Kurt Murdoch 50 Lapper at Maryborough
Following the tragic and untimely passing of local competitor Kurt Murdoch, Maryborough Sporting Car Club honoured Kurt by renaming their annual street sedan 50 lap race to the 'Kurt Murdoch 50 Lapper'.
The inaugural event was to be held over the 2012 June long weekend, but was cancelled as a result of inclement weather. Maryborough Speedway hosted the rescheduled 2012 Kurt Murdoch 50 Lapper on September 15 2012.
The event was supported by a Speedway Australia Grass Roots Grant.
20 Street Sedans nominated for the event to honour their friend, with Kurt's mother Desolee among them. Desolee teamed up with driver Richard Brosnan to race in Kurt's car while Bree Muchow, Kurt's partner, also joined the field as a passenger, riding with Josh Arthur.
In front of 1500 spectators, Brody Thomsen emerged as the inaugural winner of the Kurt Murdoch 50 Lapper in just his first season out of Junior Sedans. Brody was followed home by Neil Keldoulis, Steve Thomsen (Brody's father), Malcolm Fernke and Sarah Franz.
The next annual Kurt Murdoch 50 Lapper will be held on April 20 2013 at Maryborough Speedway.
A limited number of Grass Roots Event Grants are available each year to support events that promote the growth of Speedway through grass roots participation.
